Shabbat Shalom GRJC
Weekly Emails to the Congregation
Parshat Vayeshev 2007
Shabbat Shalom to the GRJC family,
This week we light Shabbat candles at
4:11 PM. Friday night services will begin at 8PM and
Saturday morning services will begin at 9 AM.
Sophie Lederer will become a Bat Mitzvah this Shabbat. We
wish an early Mazel Tov to Sophie and her family.
This week we read from Parshat Vayeshev. We begin reading
the story of Joseph who is sold into slavery and ends up in Egypt.
The special coat that Jacob gives Joseph is one of the motivations
for the brothers to behave toward their brother as they did.
The Torah teaches us that the brothers believed that Jacob loved
Joseph more than the others, and the coat was symbolic of that
reality for the brothers.
A special piece of clothing, however, is not always a cause of
jealousy. A special piece of clothing can also cause us to
remember a person or event. I have a shirt that I inherited
from my brother Jeff. While it is not in the best condition
now, it reminds me of the days that at least two of us, we are
three brothers, lived in the same place. It also represents
a bond with my brother since we made an agreement that we will
always keep the shirt as it is and not repair it.
Jewish tradition emphasizes the power of memory. Some
clothing brings back painful memories, such as the concentration
camp prisoner’s uniform. Then, on a happier note, we have
old Purim costumes or a tallit, or other piece of clothing, that
we wore at a special life-cycle event.
Do you have a special piece of clothing that carries memories with
it? Is there a piece of Jewish-wear in your house, a tallit,
a kippah, or something else that connects back to an important
moment for you or your family?
