Shabbat Shalom GRJC
Weekly Emails to the Congregation
Parshat Noach 2007
Shabbat Shalom to the GRJC family,
We light Shabbat candles at 6:03 PM
this evening. Tot Shabbat and Shabbat Sheli will start at
6:30 PM, followed by Friday evening services at 8 PM.
Saturday morning services will begin at 9 AM. Aaron Weiss
will become a Bar Mitzvah this Shabbat. We wish an early
Mazel Tov to the Weiss family.
This Shabbat we read from the beginning of parshat Noach.
God charges Noah to build an ark, or “tevah” in Hebrew.
According to the Encyclopedia Judaica, the ark’s dimensions in our
terms would be 730 feet x 73 feet x 44 feet yielding 43,000 tons
displacement.
My father recently retired from the Naval Sea Systems Command, and
I asked him what would be an equivalent size ship in the United
States Navy. Noah’s ark is equivalent to the size of an
Arleigh-Burke class destroyer or a Ticonderoga class cruiser.
You can find pictures of these ships online.
Unlike these ships, though, an ark has no rudder. This fact
leads us to a spiritual aspect of Noah’s shipbuilding. God
is the guide for the ark, and not Noah or his family. Just
as God guided the ark to its resting place after the flood waters
receded, we hope and pray that God will guide us both through the
times when our lives are like peaceful waters and when our lives
are like stormy seas.
