COUNTING THE OMER

From the 2nd night of Seder through the day before Shavuot, we count each of the 49 days.  Each night, we count the next day in the sequence.  The Omer was a grain offering brought on the second day of the Passover holiday in ancient times.  The Rabbis turned the Omer into a 7 week counting-up to the celebration of receiving the Torah at Sinai.  Follow this link for a printable Omer-counting calendar.

Shabbat Shalom to the GRJC family

It is MEN'S CLUB SHABBAT at the Glen Rock Jewish Center this weekend and we are looking forward to welcoming members of the Men's Club who will lead our prayers and read Torah and Haftarah.

When we celebrate Women's Shabbat or Men's Club Shabbat, it's important for us to recognize and be thankful for the particular contributions from each group to the life of our Jewish community.

We can also affirm that we all work together to make our community thrive throughout the year.  As we come up on the end of the academic year in our nursery and religious school, and as we look back over 5769 so far, we should be proud of the way so many people in our community have served as leaders, organizers, volunteers, minyan makers, teachers, students and all others...

It's important to remember also that during the summer we continue to celebrate Shabbat and holidays here at the GRJC.  We have a summer camp here and our Movin' On Widows/Widowers group continues to meet.  We'll observe the Ninth of Av (Tisha be'Av) and later on have our annual Shabbat Under the Stars and Barbeque and there's more over the summer as well...so many opportunities to participate in Jewish life over the summer!

THANK YOU TO ALL VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE GIVEN YOUR TIME IN SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO MAKE OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY A THRIVING AND MEANINGFUL WAY OF CONNECTING ONE PERSON TO ANOTHER, ONE FAMILY TO ANOTHER!  We also welcome anyone who would like to lend a hand in any way, for any amount of time, to call over to the synagogue and we'll find a way that you can use your own talent and energy within the GRJC building or beyond the walls in service to the larger community.

Growing up in Maryland there were so many different types of people who volunteered their time in so many different ways in the Jewish community where I lived.  There was the venerable Mr. Oscar Weitzberg z"l who came regularly to services and synagogue meetings well into his 90s.  There were the Torah and Haftarah readers, members of the choir, committee members and the list goes on...

Can you think of stories of synagogue/Jewish community volunteers that you remember, whether here in Glen Rock or elsewhere?    How did they contribute their own special gifts to the Jewish community?  What can we learn from their efforts?

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME BACK WITH STORIES THAT YOU MAY WISH TO SHARE.  These stories could serve to inspire others.  Email me at:  rabbi@grjc.org

With blessings for a Shabbat of peace,
Rabbi Tow
